Mr. Rowe,

For the last few years, I have seen so many boys earn Eagle and seen them "puff" out their chests, and expect others to view them so highly. Thank you for writing in the letter that I hope to one day get, that Eagle is an honor, not a right. That means a lot. Once I get Eagle, I will roll my sleeves up even more than they are not, and keep on working. Thanks.

A fellow Michael.

P.S. In your letter, you say follow the Scout Laws. Law plural. There is one scout law, and 12 points to it. You may want to change that. I don't know if anyone else had caught that. Thanks again!

Well Mike, as usual you have a wonderful way of getting to the heart of the matter and seeing the subject in a different light than most; the more truth you have about something you have to make a decision about, the better choice you'll make. I admire that you didn't say exactly what the father wanted you to say, but what you felt was the truth, and sharing some of what's in your heart to further support that truth.
You are the kind of person who means what he says and says what he means. There's no guessing with you. You are who you are and make no apologies for it. I don't mean that to sound harsh, I mean that in this world of phonies and false reality it's refreshing to see someone who is not afraid of being himself, warts and all. And although you respect views different from yours, you are not afraid to say what you really believe.
I can empathize with the football team laughing at you. I know exactly what that is like. Once when I was little, I was suckered into something the older kids were trying to get me to do and then bombarded with waterballoons while the entire neighborhood laughed, including two of my older brothers. I think this is where we learn to be "outside of cool." Who wants to be like the people that are tormenting us?

Well, as usual I've written far too much. The logo looks great, by the way. Oh, and one other thing: Jimmy Carter was president in 1977. He won the 1976 election. Just thought you'd like to know.

Don't ever change who you are,

Cake Lady

I'll see if this works. I usually can't respond from work...maybe the MRW is different from the mb in that way.

Cake Lady,

I wonder if Mike or his parents specifically asked for Pres. Ford to send the congratulatory letter to him. The letters can be requested of anyone, present or past Presidents of V.P.'s included. President Ford was the first (and maybe only?) president to be an Eagle Scout. Or maybe Mike recieved his Eagle Scout Award before Jimmy Carter took over??? He took over in Jan. of '77 I think.

According to the White House website, http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/gf38.html
Gerald Ford was our Thirty-Eighth President - 1974-1977.

CL - you might wanna let The White House 'bout the mistake on their website... I'm quite sure they'd like to know, dontcha think??

Well there I go again letting my fingers work before my brain is completely finished figuring something out. duh! Once President Ford became President, he is ALWAYS called President for the rest of his life. {grabs feather duster and cleans dust out of brain}..........there, that's better.

I guess my mind was still on Mike's letter. I'm always moved by those people not afraid of the truth; believing it, speaking it, walking it, living it. I believe that someone REALLY truthful said "The truth will make you free." But he DIDN'T say that it would feel good. I'm sure Mike knows this. And those who are not afraid to stand by their convictions - their numbers are dwindling. How many people nowadays "go with the flow" so they can fit in and avoid confrontation? or be "on the inside of cool"? Unfortunately that is more and more the norm these days. I admire people who don't let the world push them around. I'm learning to do that and it's very inspiring.

I do hope you'll forgive me Mike, and debi for my faux pas. I'll try to keep the chaff and dross out of my thought process from now on - or at least to a minimum.

Hey Super ES-2B Dude - Great job there, catching that typo! I'll let Mike know to fire the bozo who typed that up. (Oh, wait, that'd be himself... never mind )

Seriously, that's pretty on the ball there. I can't tell ya how many of us read that letter and didn't catch that. (And some of us scouts, I'm embarassed to admit ) We'll get that fixed right away - thanks for bringing our attention to it.

Keep with the program, dude - you're gonna go far. (sa-LUTE!)

Knew that there was a good chance that Mike would write to the kid.

The letter is warm. It makes the kid wonder "Why" and hopefully inspire him/her to conclude to the "How" that each of us must decide for ourselves.

Thanks Mike. You are one of the gem in the world of celebs. I mean as DinO and others correctly expressed "You're Hotttt".

Hey Cake lady,

If I asked you to excuse my faux pas, the correct response would be "which one"?

In truth, your letter caused me to look up Eagle Scout and learn a few things. I didn't realize what a big deal it really is. It made me appreciate Mikes accomplishment even more and that of every Eagle Scout out there. Also, I thot it was pretty cool to find out the Pres. Ford was the first Eagle Scout to become president. I had no reason to know that and didn't. If you want to learn some interesting things about it, google it. Thank heavens for Google!

debi,

No worries. I really did have dust in the brain. I am going to look up Eagle Scouts. You are right, it does sound interesting. Thanks!
